Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art (EF Mount) - The lens I wish i’d kept.
February 10, 2025 As photographers, we often find ourselves in a constant state of evolution, whether it’s upgrading gear, trying new techniques, or simply letting go of old favourites. Last year I made that I’ve come to deeply regret: selling my Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART (EF Mount) lens for my Canon 5DMKIV.
The Love Affair with the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART (EF Mount)
When I first got my hands on the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART (EF Mount), it felt like I had found the perfect companion for my Canon 5DMKIV. This lens was not just a tool but an extension of my creative vision. With its incredible sharpness across all genres (Landscapes, Events, etc.) and impressive high ISO capabilities, this lens soon enough became by go to lens for both Storytelling imagery & Landscape Photography. I originally purchased it for Landscapes, as I had nothing smaller than a 50mm, but I found that it even became incredibly effective at capturing fast moments effectively, such as with Mountain Biking Events.
Why I Decided to Sell It
There were a few reasons behind my decision to part ways with this beloved lens. Initially, I was looking to fund a new project and thought I could live without it. Additionally, I convinced myself that my current setup was versatile enough and that I could replace the Sigma with another lens that might fit my needs just as well. I had just purchased a Canon 16-35mm F/2.8 and decided that this would cover the job. The Canon lens is brilliant, but the Sigma at 24mm really is a different beast at this focal length.
The Regret Sets In
Looking back, I realise how wrong I was. The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART (EF Mount) lens wasn’t just another piece of gear; it was a cornerstone of my photography arsenal. The sharpness and colour rendition it offered are hard to match. Since selling it, I’ve found that the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8 II USM doesn’t quite cut the mustard at that 24mm range. Saying this, I haven’t tested the latest Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 III USM - which i’ve heard is much sharper, especially in the corners.
Lessons Learned
If you’re considering selling a piece of gear, especially one that has been a reliable part of your toolkit, take a moment to reflect on its true value. Sometimes, what seems like a good idea in the moment can become a lesson in hindsight. My Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART (EF Mount) will always hold a special place in my heart, and while I might not have it in my kit anymore, the memories and the lessons it taught me will stay with me forever - until I repurchase it… where more memories will be made.
